What Happens When a Signal Provider Loses: Understanding Drawdowns

Drawdowns Are Normal

Even the best signal providers on the leaderboard experience losing streaks. A drawdown is the decline from a peak in your account equity to a trough. It measures the worst loss you experienced before recovering.

Types of Drawdown

  • Relative drawdown - Maximum decline as a percentage of the peak balance
  • Absolute drawdown - Maximum decline from the initial deposit
  • Daily drawdown - Largest single-day loss

When to Stay

  • The drawdown is within the leader's historical range (e.g., they've recovered from 15% drawdowns before)
  • The leader's strategy hasn't fundamentally changed
  • Market conditions explain the temporary loss (e.g., unexpected news event)

When to Consider Leaving

  • Drawdown exceeds the leader's historical worst by 50%+ (e.g., their worst was 10%, now at 20%)
  • The leader increases lot sizes dramatically during losses (revenge trading)
  • No communication or strategy explanation from the leader
